Every book sold gives us the funds to provide reading tools to a classroom of children. The number and types of reading tools we give away depends entirely on the needs of the children and schools.
More access to books leads to more reading, which in turn leads to better literacy development. In many areas of the world children do not have any access to books, and it is even rarer for a child to have a book of their own.
Our aim is not only to foster literacy, but also to promote and encourage the creativity and whole brained thinking that leads to all great, world-changing ideas.
The more prominent languages are taking over so rapidly that children are no longer learning the language of their parents. HumanWrit.es believes that all children should learn to read and write in their mother tongue.
Not only will this ensure the survival of many languages that add to our world’s rich diversity, but it also ensures that stories and lessons shared among a language group are not lost, but can be recorded and passed down to future generations.
HumanWrit.es could not be doing this without the guidance of Ikamva Labantu. They are a Cape Town based organisation that has been operating for almost 50 years and currently cares for 25 000 children and adults in the area.
One of the reasons we have so much respect for this organisation is that they look at every community and problem holistically and strive to provide long term solutions and not quick fixes. Because of their vast experience and involvement with these communities, Ikamva Labantu has been able to provide HumanWrit.es with information about what is really needed and will serve as the perfect partner in distributing these books.
For each Writable sold, 10 workbooks are donated to children in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. These books are specially designed for the youngest members of the community. The aim is to instil a passion for reading and learning during their earliest years that will form the foundation for all their world-changing ideas. The workbooks from the first edition of the Writable were donated to 20 000 children in over 200 Early Childhood Development centres around Khayelitsha that form part of the Ithemba Labantwana community forum, operated under the umbrella of Ikamva Labantu.
We are in the process of developing some exciting new products. The give-away items for our new products are being developed taking into account the feedback from the teachers in the various Early Childhood Development centres, as well as the coordinators at Ikamva Labantu. A story book is being designed for 3 – 5 year olds, and will act as a bridge between Educare centres and parents. The aim will be to encourage a love of reading in young children by creating warm and engaged moments with their significant care-givers.
