A pack of 5 story books to inspire, create, and educate.
Just like the Writable provides us with a canvas to conceptualise and kick-start our world changing ideas, so to do story books in nurturing developing the minds of young children. Each give away pack consists of four beautifully illustrated Xhosa story books, square in shape and small in size, perfectly suited for the little hands that hold them. The stories are all different too, each one focusing on different theme with the aim of introducing new life lessons to the child.
The 5th book is a blank paged book, titled Incwadi Yam, or 'My Story' in English. This blank book in a way is the child's very own Writable, and a blank canvas to create and illustrate their own story with the help of their teacher, parents, or care-givers. Not just a give and go approach, these story book packs form part of Ikamva Labantu's Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes and are used as teaching aids by the practitioners and care-givers.
A massive thank you to Nal’ibali publishers and Carole Bloche (illustrations) without whom these amazing story books would not have been possible.
Think back to your childhood growing up... How many stories do you remember reading with your parents, older siblings or grandparents?
For some that's not always a reality, but with every Writable you buy we aim to make it one.
Why story books?
For the hundreds of children whom Ikamva Labantu care for and teach each day in their edu-care centres, having a book of their own, or even reading a story with a loved one or care-giver is not always a reality. Story books are a scarcity and HumanWrit.es and Ikamva Labantu believe this a problem. Not only from an emotional perspective, but from an educational one too.
Stories are extremely important in early childhood development and allow for a sense of imagination and learning by introducing new ideas into a child's world - ideas of exploration, fantasy, faraway planets and much more. They don't only encourage a sense of imagination though, but also serve as a great way to educate children about life concepts, feelings and everyday tasks.

Ikamva Labantu and Early Childhood Development (ECD)
Ikamva Labantu look at every community and problem holistically and strive to provide long-term solutions, not simple quick fixes. Because of their vast experience and involvement with these communities, Ikamva Labantu has been able to provide HumanWrit.es with insights as to what is really needed, and serve as a perfect partner in distributing these books.
Through the ECD programmes, Ikamva Labantu train educators and parents in recognised teaching methods, provide educational equipment, and hands-on support for more than 12,000 pre-school children in 200 under-developed daycare centres.
All of the story book packs are delivered to Kwakhanya, their flagship ECD learning centre based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, and from there are distributed to the surrounding edu-care centres.
The Kwakhanya centre offers three fully equipped classrooms for 45 children - from newborns to five-year-olds. Parents and practitioners are trained on-site on how to use the story book packs as part of the training programme before they are given to the children to take home and share with their family.
